Weekend Round Up

It was a high-stakes weekend for FC Davis as both the men’s and women’s squads clashed with Iron Rose FC in a Davis vs. Roseville doubleheader. The Lionesses defended home turf at Playfields, while the Lions hit the road to close out their regular season.

The Lions

Riding an exceptional run of form throughout the 2025 campaign, the FC Davis men entered their final regular season match needing just a draw to clinch the league title over rivals Oakland SC. Boasting a record of 11 wins and 1 draw, the Lions had established themselves as the team to beat.

Their opponent, Iron Rose FC, sat in 8th place and had everything to play for. Only a win would be enough to punch their ticket to the playoffs—anything less would bring their season to a close.

The first half was a lively affair with chances for both sides. Despite Davis controlling possession and pace, Iron Rose was first on the board, converting a penalty to go up 1-0. The lead didn’t last long, as Elijah Alba answered back with a composed finish. Iron Rose responded again with another goal, but Davis stayed relentless—Lucas Fernandez-Kim knotted the score at 2-2 going into halftime.

After the break, the Lions came out refocused and ruthless. In a dominant second-half display, they overwhelmed Iron Rose with a flurry of goals. Johnny Montoya, Elijah Alba (his second of the night), Diego Marquez, Sergio Marquez, and Oscar Obacar all found the back of the net in rapid succession. The final whistle sounded with Davis on top, 7-2.

With the win, the Lions were officially crowned 2025 Regular Season Champions.

Next up: FC Davis will host Bay Valley Suns in the first round of the playoffs this Saturday, June 21st at 7:30 PM under the lights at Playfields.

The Lionesses

Back at home, the FC Davis women entered the weekend unbeaten, carrying a 3-0 record and sitting atop the NorCal Conference standings. Their opponents, Iron Rose FC, were still in search of their first win of the season—yet they arrived hungry and determined.

From the opening whistle, Iron Rose showed intent. They pressed high, won nearly every 50/50 challenge, and disrupted the Davis rhythm in midfield. Their aggressive approach paid off, with two first-half goals giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.

The Lionesses regrouped and came out with urgency in the second half, generating wave after wave of attacks. Despite dominating possession and creating several quality chances, the finishing touch eluded them. The lone breakthrough came courtesy of Isabella Vinsonhaller, whose strike gave Davis hope in the final minutes. But time ran out, and the match ended 2-1 in favor of Iron Rose.

It marked the Lionesses' first loss since the 2023 season—a tough result but one that offers lessons as the team looks to bounce back.

The FC Davis women will be back in action Friday night, June 20th, when they travel to San Francisco to take on the SF Nighthawks in another pivotal conference matchup.
