FC Davis would like to congratulate head coach Ricky Alba and the Davis Legacy 2010 Boys Red players and families on their recent NorCal State Championship win.
After outlasting over 150 teams, the 2009 boys met Mustang Soccer Club from Danville in the finals.
The game started off on shaky ground when going into halftime, Davis was down 0-1.
“I knew as long as the team stayed focused, competed hard and had fun with the remaining 25 minutes they would put themselves in a position to make it a successful second half,” said Alba.
Alba’s words rang true as Davis snagged two goals shortly after half time to pull ahead 2-1.
However, almost immediately after Davis’ second goal, Mustang put home an equalizer 10 seconds from the restart.
In the final minute, it looked as if the game was headed into extra time. With the score knotted at 2-2, everyone assumed the scoreline would carry to the final whistle of regulation.
Davis had other ideas.
With 30 seconds remaining, the team was rewarded a corner kick.
As the final seconds were winding down, the ball was quickly placed on the ground and served into the box. The cross met Jonah Douhab, who half-volleyed the ball off the corner and blew it past the Mustang keeper.
Celebrations ensued.
The final whistle blew.
Davis carried off the state title with a 3-2 victory.
“The kids are so young that these types of games serve more as learning experiences for the boys. The focus at the younger ages has nothing to do with winning games. The boys should internally want to win since that is the point of competition. The message delivered deals with using their skills, being creative, enjoying play and having fun. That is what's most important for the development of players at this age, the joy of the game. You saw the product of that during the second half,” said Alba.
The state cup victory capped off a successful summer, fall and winter run for the team who also captured the NorCal Fall League Region 6 title.
