The men in black and gold were awarded for their stellar regular season, as the Lions placed four players in the Golden Gate Conference starting XI, the most of any team.
At forward, FC Davis leading scorer Miguel Acevedo was selected as one of the conferences top three strikers. Miguel led the front line game in and game out, with a memorable hat-trick in the Causeway Clasico that clinched the regular season title for FC Davis.
It was no surprise to see Onah Power claim his spot in the Conference Starting XI midfield after a dominant outing in the 2019 campaign. The skilled and vocal leader consistently impacted every game for Davis not only on the defensive end, but the offense end as well.
Brian Ford was tabbed as one of the Golden Gate Conferences top three defenders. The Newport Beach native shutdown opposing teams attacks for the Lions while playing a crucial role jump-starting the devastating FC Davis counter-attack.
Jon Laughlin was selected the conferences top keeper. The 6’4” net-minder showed up time and again when called upon throughout the season. Big saves were a staple of Laughlin’s year as the San Jose native finished the season second in GPG, an impressive stat due to the number of players the Lions commit into the attack.
The only omission, which was a shock to most, was that of head coach Mark Torguson.
Torguson’s team ran away with the Golden Gate Conference title to the tune of 7 points. The gaffer pulled the strings through a time period which saw the Lions go through a plethora of injuries and do so while expanding their conference lead. During the course of the season, Davis only dropped points three times and only had one loss to their name.
While the omission of coach Torguson turned heads, the soccer community at large recognizes the stellar work done from the sidelines every weekend for Golden Lions that catapulted the team to its first Golden Gate Conference title in only its second season in the league.
We applaud our 2019 Starting XI selections and also the entire FC Davis roster, as individual awards are only a result of team success!
