From Anger To Action: Young Leaders of Yolo

After protests end, social media messages fade and the focus of our media shifts to the next major event, a familiar feeling will begin to settle in. With decades of injustices behind us, progress for marginalized communities has remained relatively stagnant despite public outcry. While national protests are an important first step towards spotlighting inequality, the majority of past movements were unable to maintain momentum that translated into legislative and institutional changes.  Learning how to harness the energy of a movement to create change is critical to the future of equality in America. Gaining experience in this process is particularly important for our future youth leaders who will one day shape policies affecting African-Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, LGBTQ, and those with mental health and physical disabilities. As a country we are captivated by national politics, but it is state and local elections that provide opportunities for community members to re-shape the towns in which they live. In order to move our country forward, we need the voices of our energetic and talented youth to be involved earlier in their lives. To provide a platform for our aspiring community mobilizers, FC Davis is launching Young Leaders of Yolo, an initiative aimed at fostering the energy and vision of our local students and directing their ideas towards projects that shape the spaces we live in. Each cohort will learn how to:

  • Identify Community Problems

  • Set Goals For Change

  • Build A Coalition

  • Organize A Campaign

  • Execute and Evaluate Their Project

To be included in the program, applicants must be:

  • A current high school student residing in Davis, Dixon, Woodland, or Winters.
