Lions and Lioness Roar To Kickoff 2021 Campaign

It was a weekend to remember as FC Davis men and women took the field on the same day for the first time in club history.

The Lions hosted Oakland Stompers while the women took a trip down 680 to battle San Ramon FC for their WPSL debut.

The Lioness started the weekend with a 5:00pm kick off, playing at Tiffany Roberts Stadium for the clubs first ever WPSL match.

Six minutes into the game lighting struck, when the Lioness pressure led to a shot on goal which deflected into the back of the net to put the away side up 1-0.

After the goal, it was a back and forth clash with both team creating chances on goal. FC Davis net minder and San Diego State star Alexa Madueno made two world-class saves to keep the scoreline 1-0 in favor of the Lioness.

In the second half, Davis found momentum in their favor and looked to capitalize off a period of dominating play. The break through came off a set piece, when Gaby Herrera (San Jose State) sent a ball into the box which was headed on by Jackie Koerwitz (University of Miami). The ball was delicately placed to the back post and was met by a streaking Molly Branigan (UC Davis), who found the back of the net with a header of her own.

When the final whistle blew, the Lioness secured their first ever WPSL victory with 2-0 win over San Ramon FC.

At 7:00pm, it was the Lions turn in a COVID closed door match at Playfields. The reigning Golden Gate Conference champions hosted Oakland Stompers in match the home side needed to win in order to keep pace at the top of the table.

It was no contest from the start, as the Lions dominated play from start to finish. Jaime Robles led off the scoring for Davis, who never looked back after hearing the sound of the back of the net. It was goal, after goal, after goal for the home side who put on a dizzying array of skill to keep pace with Academica SC and El Farolito for first place.

The game finished 6-1, with additional goals from Titus Washington, Evan Barrett, Caua Soares, and Pablo Ros.

The Lions will head down to SF this Saturday for an away match against powerhouse El Farolito, before returning home for “opening” night when Davis hosts Sacramento Gold for the Causeway Clasico.

The Lioness will host their first ever WPSL game this Saturday night at 7:00pm when Pleasanton Rage come to Davis. Tickets are on sale now!
