It was an FC Davis classic on Saturday night as the Lions and Academica battled in a back and forth match that saw both sides throwing everything into 90 minutes on the pitch.
The two NPSL heavyweights clashed on Saturday night to see who would claim the #1 seed heading into the Golden Gate Conference post season.
Academica came out of the gates quick, scoring a goal off their patented play down the wings. After a deflection saw the ball fall in the visitors favor, Andy Velasquez finished off a cross to put the side from Turlock up by one.
After the goal, Davis kicked into gear scoring three unanswered goals in a span of 20 minutes. The first two were finished by FC Davis leading scorer Justin Wright, followed by a goal of the year candidate finish by center back Jaime Robles.
Just as Davis thought there was light was between the two sides, Academica scored off a five pass sequence straight from the kick off to score on the last play of the half.
The second half was full of chances for both sides, with keepers Lara (Academica) and Perez-Plata (Davis) keeping their sides in the match with equally impressive saves on both ends.
With ten minutes remaining, Davis broke the tie open when Nick Hyde stripped the ball and took off on a 70 yard solo run where he was fouled in the box. Hyde then followed up by scoring the penalty, and sealing a 4-2 victory for the Lions.
The win gave Davis home field advantage and the #1 seed, making it two season in a row Davis has topped the Golden Gate Conference table.
Round one will take place on Saturday, July 31st at 7:00pm when Sonoma Sol visit the Lions. Davis won the only meeting of the two teams this season 4-2.
